Should Cargo Carriers Be Exempt From Flight/Duty Changes?

The fatigue issue, within the aviation field, is a topic that has been discussed since the historical transoceanic flight of Lindbergh but it has never given much importance to the subject. Since then, scientific knowledge on fatigue has grown enormously. However, it cannot be said that the regulations have evolved accordingly. Nowadays, technology and operational changes within aviation have brought the issue to a critical point. Airplanes now fly over 16 hours without interruption, operations at night time have become almost the norm, even in the medium range. Huge economic pressures create the conditions for a further increase in fatigue. Fatigue, as proven by numerous studies, influences memory, attention to detail, the ability to communicate and make decisions. It is nothing less than an experience of physical and mental weakness that results in a reduction of attention. For most people, the primary cause of this fatigue is the lack of rest. It was an excessive fatigue on the pa...

Is pilot mental health a real thing?

Pilots mental health is often very underestimated. In fact, suicides committed my pilots are more frequent than what we would think. On March 24 th 2015, Andreas Lubitz, decided to put an end to his life by dramatically crashing, on purpose, the airplane that he was flying and bringing with him all the 149 innocent souls that were onboard the aircraft. Germanwings flight number 9525, for which Lubitz was the first officer, was a passenger international flight between Barcelona (Spain) and Dusseldorf (Germany). The flight that day left from Barcelona with 20 minutes of delay. The cockpit voice records showed that for the first twenty minutes of the flight, there was normal verbal exchanges between the Captain Patrick Sonderheiner and the co-pilot Lubitz (Armstrong & Murphy, 2015). The captain, in those 20 minutes told Lubitz that he had no time to go to the toilet in Barcelona. The flight regularly climbed to 38...

Professionalism and Regional Airlines

One of the hot topics that is really discussed nowadays within the aviation industry, is the issue regarding the pilot shortage. Issue that in my opinion exists and is already starting to manifest itself within some airlines around the world. The airlines that are having the greatest impact from this phenomenon are those so-called the regional airlines. The regional airlines were created by the major airlines because they wanted to lower their personal operating costs. All over the world, several airlines are having difficulty flying all their fleet because there is a lack of pilots, which forces them to reduce air service and to ground airplanes. For example, Alaska Airlines regional arm, Horizon Air, in the summer months (period in which it has the highest profits), had to cancel almost 6% of its total scheduled flights, because of their lack of pilots (Ostrower, 2017) . Another example may be the case of Republic Airways, which a determining factor for its filing for bankruptcy pr...
Nenne's Introduction My love towards aviation started at a really young age and with a specific airplane. When I was about 5 years old I used to live in China and to be able to go back and forth from Italy, where I am from, I had to take the airplane. During one of my trips from Frankfurt to Shanghai I flew with the Boeing747 and that was the day in which I fell in love with airplanes and aviation itself. Seeing that gigantic machine flying across the blue skies, with such elegancies, made me want to embark on the journey that one day, hopefully, will bring me to be at the flight controls of a 747. From that day, my life started to rotate around the biggest dream of my life, which is to become a 747 pilot. I am currently a Junior in the aviation management program and I will graduate in December 2018. Also, if I am a management student I am still earning my pilot certificates. I try to stay active in the aviation community as much as possible in fact I am the treasurer of ...
